This is the essay proposal:
Bringing the digital to life
This essay will briefly explore how the digital media came to be, how it is used today and how it may evolve in the future.
Digital media has become a part of our day to day life even more so there isn’t a day that passes when an individual living in a modern society will not use it.
From creating a simple digital entity like a line of text to a actually bringing the digital to life by creating robots that can use artificial intelligence, allowing them to interact with humans or continuing to find different ways to deeply immerse the human mind in to the digital world.
One of the possible futures is consisting in trying to make the digital alive, to make robots with artificial intelligence that can interact with humans and make decision, even though the reality of Battle Star Gallactica or Terminator is far away in to the future, thing are already set in motion toward a working android. The Honda ASIMO uses the most advanced artificial intelligence software in order to be able to interact with its surroundings, making it possible for it to recognize objects, and make simple rational decisions.
The other possible future of the digital media might be to embed the human consciousness into to the digital media .The first step is to make the digital replicas of cities and introduce social behavior to computer created characters by use of artificial intelligence and then interact with them as one would interact with another human. Social networks are just the beginning step towards creating something similar to “the Matrix”, allowing humans to interact with each other by use of the computer, networks like second life have already began to create 3d characters which are controlled by the user, even more so real world and digital world boundaries have started to fade, allowing avatars from the network to pay bills online to actual service providers. The Only thing now to make this more real is to develop the technologies to enable the human body to perceive the interaction with the digital environment as it would to in the real world. Discovery news presented a research where scientist were able to connect a bionic hand to the nerves endings of a human’s amputated arm and achieved the goal of him being able to move the robotic arm with his thoughts.
Evan though there may be many possible paths that digital media may evolve; the goal will remain the same, to be able to interact with it as humans interact between each other.
My tutor told me to “start off by dividing the essay in to three parts, the first part being the introduction and detailing it were this obsession of digital media came in to our modern society, and then develop the tow ideas were the digital comes to live (HONDA ASIMO, robotic arms . androids, Artificial intelligence robots, Terminator ) and were life goes to the digital(The Lawnmower Man (1992) , The Matrix ), and as a conclusion try and see where it might go in to the future .. How it may evolve based on current research and technology combined with fiction books upon Hollywood inspired their movies.
