I am looking for a desktop application that will identify all open applications on the taskbar and create a desktop or system tray shortcut icon that, once clicked, will reopen all of those applications. This would be called something like Desktop Saver.
Preferaply, this would be launched from the system tray. Not only should the icon reopen those same applications, but it should also open the specified file that was being viewed within that application at the time. For example, if a user has open an Excel file, "[url removed, login to view]," a word document, "[url removed, login to view]," a website on Internet Explorer, www. sample . com, and the Calculator, this application would see that all those items are open in the taskbar. It would then open a form that lists each of those open applications and files. The user would then select all the applications that he or she wanted to save to reopen at a later time. The user would then hit save. The applications would then create a desctop icon or system tray shortcut that would launch all of the selected applications and specific files once clicked. This way, if a user needed to restart his or her machine or turn it off for the night or weeken, they could return the next day and reopen every application and file where they left off or last saved.
The desktop icon that was created would automatically delete once all the applications opened. If the user, at a later time, wanted to reopen that same sequence of applications and files again, an icon for Desktop Saver would reside in the system tray or on the desktop. This icon could be clicked and it would have a history option that would allow the most recently saved sequence of applications and files to be reopened just as if that icon had been clicked.
There should also be the option to have a favorites list. This would be used, for example, in a scenario when a user needed to open the same set of spreadsheets at the end of each month to update them with the monthly numbers. The user could have that set of 5 or so spreadsheets saved as a favorite "Desktop" that could be opened whenever they wanted.
I realize this application will need to create a backend file as the source of the saved desktop. I would prefer this to be in the form of a temporary text file or something more common that would be available on a basic install of Windows XP.
