setup RADIUS/LDAP server to authenticate users via POP3

there's an email server with pop3 and imap access. i'm setting up a wireless hotspot with radius and would like every user that is already on the email server to be able to login i.e. authenticate via the mail server access.

the hotspot will direct the login credentials to the mail server and if the mail server answers with a positive response, the user is granted access. I'm thinking this can be done with a slight modification of a RADIUS server to proxy requests to the mail server and then grant access on success. Please don't bother to respond to this if you're not already familiar with extending radius authentication.
