Hi I require a freight calculator to be made that has the ability to add new transport carrier rates to it.
the way these calculators work is first you need to know the recipient's suburb.
for example: Sydney postal code (zip code) is: 2000
Once that is received the weight and dimensions are entered.
Based on the weight and dimensions the customer is either charged by weight or cubic dimensions whichever is greater.
For Example: a box weighing 1kg with dimensions 120*120*120 would be charged at the volumetric weight
different carrier's have different cubic conversions for example some charge a 250 cubic this means that the dimensions (120*120*120) would be put in metres (1.2*1.2*1.2) then you would charge the end result of the multiplication (1.728) x 250.
end result = 432 rounded up to nearest kg.
and 432 would be the charge weight.
So then you would refer to the pricing guide. now most transport carriers require a weight range and also a rating zone:
From To 0 - 500 Kg 501 - 1000 Kg 1001 - 3000 Kg 3001 Kg & Over CUBIC
Sydney Adelaide 0.174 0.162 0.150 0.146 333
Brisbane 0.164 0.152 0.142 0.136 333
Melbourne 0.134 0.119 0.110 0.103 333
Perth 0.469 0.451 0.433 0.417 333
as you can see above the carriers have a different rate per weight break and also per zone,
and this carrier charges a 333 cubic conversion not a 250 like we did before
these charges also have a basic fee which is added to the charge and also a minimum charge
so if a customer sends a 5kg box with dimensions (0.2*0.2*0.2) to Melbourne with the above rate they would pay 5kg x 0.134 + $12
so $12.67 but this carrier has a minimum of 45.00 so the charge would be 45.00
now carriers also have a fuel levy surcharge which changes monthly so this would need to be in the calculator also.
and on top of all this there are many locations which are allocated to a postcode which the rate refers to.
For example Albany, Bunbury, Busselton, Collie, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Mount Barker, York are all in regional Western Australia and for this particular carrier any freight going to these areas is charged at the rate which applies to WAZ1
and each carrier is different.
I can send you an example of a calculator we have in excel if need be
but ideally I would like some software visual basic or whatever which I can add multiple carriers to with their rating zones and their rates.
I then want to be able to select the carrier from a drop down list or have all the prices showing with the carriers name
so if I want a pallet weighing 400kg going to Albany WA I want a result with all the carriers showing how much it would be with each carrier.
but as you can imagine customers don't only send one item so it needs to have multiple lines available at least up to 30 items.
one item per line.
if you are confused and would like to know more information please contact me.
