Upgrade Apache on VPS for Wordpress

I have a VPS (4vCores, 4GB RAM, 50GB RAID 10 HD) where I run multiple Wordpress sites. I moved over my sites from a shared hosting account and have noticed that a few things need to be upgraded/installed. For example, I am currently running MySQL 5.1 that is unsupported, I need to have gd library installed to utilize CAPTCHA plugins, as well as the mbstring extension enabled for another plugin.
I am in need of a system admin who can successfully upgrade my version of apache in the background to allow for the current sites to continue to operate.I also am only comfortable in sharing control of my screen to allow you to complete this upgrade to avoid sharing root password.
