What should the annotation be about?
You are expected to include 3 key aspects in the annotation as outlined in the task description. These are:
(a) a description of your artefact represents key ideas about the impact of social, economic and cultural change on the purpose and outcomes of education in the 21st century (This will require explanation of how professionalism is related to responding to diversity and providing opportunities for ALL students to achieve the second goal of the Melbourne Declaration through a commitment to equity and expectations for excellence and the development of specific types of attributes in learners to meet the changing expectations of the world of work in a knowledge economy. e.g. successful learners, confident and creative individuals, active and informed citizens.
(b) an explanation of how your artefact shows that educators’ work is affected by issues of social justice, diversity and equity. This essentially means that you need to describe professionalism in the terms identified by Shulman and Darling-Hammond and identify that there can be no recipe for teaching if it is professional work. This section will require you to explain why equity is an important issue that depends on the context and the groups of students you are working with and will need to show consideration of the fact that although all students are expected to meet the same educational outcomes the process used may have to differ if education is to be equitable. You should ensure that you show why teaching involves decision-making, an ethical and moral commitment to equity and ongoing professional learning as a key aspect of teachers’ work i.e. the idea of “inside-out ethics” that you explored in Topic 10.
(c) an evaluation of how the Standards, Codes of Ethics and Codes of Conduct all work together to support ways in which teachers can meet the expectations of many different stakeholders. This could include identifying what the Standards leave out or cannot adequately describe in terms of the sorts of decisions teachers might have to make that are equitable and meet the needs of many students who are disadvantaged and how this requires ethical or moral judgments to be made. (This may involve making choices about how to meet professional expectations that have the best effect on student learning, engagement and outcomes.)
