Since this is a Writing Intensive (WT) designated course, you will need to write a lengthy paper. The paper assignment is a two part writing and research exercise. The first half of the paper is a book review of one of the selected works listed at the end of the syllabus. These works were chosen because they were equivalent in length to each other and provide a range of important topics and sites in historical archaeology. As you look into acquiring one of these books you may find other books of interest. If you find something else that may be appropriate, make sure to get my approval before using it for the book review portion of the paper. An effective review will be one that identifies and explains the major points or arguments of the author. You may be critical because, hopefully you should be aware, archaeology and what we know about the past can change with perspectives by fresh minds and additional research, so you should not assume what you read is completely correct (except what I write and publish).
The second half of the paper is research oriented where you will put the book you reviewed in a comparative historical archaeological context. Through research, show how important ideas or conclusions fit within our archaeological knowledge of similar topics within historical archaeology. The research component of the paper can come from any respectable archaeological research including published texts and academic journals. Archaeological web pages are notoriously uninformative, out of date, and you need to be aware of pages masquerading as science (sites like those from conspiracy theorists, looters, and amateurs).
The paper assignment criteria follows:
-10-15 pages; 5-6 pages consists of the book review portion
-1” margins. Be aware that 1” is not usually the standard setting for word processing programs.
-Times New Roman font
-Due date on the syllabus
- Papers may be turned in earlier
-Papers must be submitted through eCampus to check [login to view URL] and as a hard copy for grading.
-Grades will be assigned for content and grammar
