If you've ever watched "A Knight's Tale", you know that blacksmithing is not only a fun hobby, but can be an important part of winning over your fair-maiden's heart. Blacksmithing dates way back to around 1500 BC, when a tribe of ancient people called the Hittites discovered the process of tempering metals and forging. A lot of their knowledge about blacksmithing was lost due to the distant geographic locations their tribes spanned, but when the Iron Age came about in the first half of the 19th century, a consistent process for making wroght iron was developed and used to produce rudimentary tools that were much more durable than what people currently had at the time.
You should try if: Don't be intimidated by the long list of things you'll need to try this hobby, many of the things are supplies that men already own and can be re-purposed. [login to view URL] ([login to view URL]) has a great guide on how to start making your first sword if you want to get started! Additionally, this is going to be a big hobby that you can really invest your time and love into. Weapons, armor or even just things around the house can be elegantly displayed, worn to events or even sold for a profit. Check out one of our all-time favorite blacksmiths, Torbjörn Åhman ( [login to view URL]), to see the amazing things you can create and watch the whole process.
