Changes to existing site - page design, .NET, AJAX

There's a lot of detail here, but if you need more, please say and I'll clarify.

We have a website (SQL, .NET, ASP) that shows short news summaries of articles on different topics. You can see a development site here www.healthandwellness360.com.

We need to add some functionality to the site:

1. Registration and login facilities

2. Search facility

3. Automatic email to subscribers

4. Summary upload facility

5. Summary editor and review facility

For all these, you will need to look after all aspects of the work, from layout and user design, to SQL queries, ASP script, uploading it to our servers (development area) and debugging and trouble shooting etc.

These are our core requirements at this point but we have a list of improvements we plan to make, many of which use AJAX. We also run a number of other sites that need changes and are about to create some new ones too (some of which require PHP and MySQL). Our goal is to form a long term relationship with a provider (so please indicate an hourly rate for your work).

Here are details for each area:

Context:

Summaries are provided by Writers and reviewed and accepted by Editors. Each of these will need a page where they can login and get to their work areas (described below). Until summaries are reviewed and accepted they are not visible on the site.

Aside from interested visitors, the site will be used by two sets of people. Those that register (free) and those that register but also are subscribers. There will be some individual subscribers, but for the most part, subscriptions will happen at the corporate level, such that everyone with a certain email domain (eg, @[url removed, login to view]) will have access. Every user, even those with a corporate subscription, will need to register.

1. Registration and login facilities

a) A nicely laid out page where people can register, entering these details (with * indicating required)

First name

Last name

Company

Email address*

Password*

Want alert email? (Y/N)*

Accept T&C*

Click Submit for the system to create the recode and send out confirmation email with a unique URL for the user to click on and confirm the account.

Once the user returns to the site with their unique URL and confirms the account we ask two additional questions for those marked as subscribers (ie, the system needs to check the email’s domain name):

- Frequency of email (picklist of options, daily, twice weekly, weekly, monthly)

- Search criteria to use when selecting summaries for the email

b) A login box where people enter their email and password to gain higher level access (as a registered user or subscriber).

This would also allow them access to:

- A My Account area where they can change their preferences and details, including whether they receive email alerts, their frequency and any search criteria (you need to write this page)

- A facility to Contact Us (another page to write – we already have a version so it should be easy to adopt)

c) Editing pages where a webmaster can locate and edit/delete the details of any person that has registered, and also add/change their subscription status. In addition to subscriptions for individuals, we need to be able to set subscriptions for anyone with a particular email domain.

d) For people inputting summaries, we need a page where we can declare someone a Writer or Editor, as well as change their details/status.

2. Search facility

We have a basic search facility at the site but we need to put in a better one, using a facility that indexes a number of fields. We don’t know how to do this but understand it is pretty easy.

If you look at [url removed, login to view] you can see that all the summaries are tabulate by Geography (multiple), Sub Domains (multiple) and Category (multiple). The search facility needs to be able to work with or without these tabulations.

3. Automatic email to subscribers

We will be adding summaries to the site all the time and users may want to receive alert emails that send them the summaries. For this we need:

a) Script that will select the summaries for each user that wants an alert, bearing in mind that some will run on different schedules and selections for some users need to apply search criteria. Alert emails for registered users that are not subscribers will all go out at the same time and without any search criteria applied. Alerts for subscribers will have different frequencies and may also apply search criteria.

b) Script that will array the selected summaries in a nicely formatted html email and sends it off. We have a dedicated server and mail server and, apparently, facilities to do this but we don’t know how.

4. Summary upload facility

We have writers that write the summaries. Each writer needs a web-page facility to be able to enter each summary, which has the following characteristics:

Summary data

1. Header (Text)

2. Date entered (time stamp, automatically created when summary entered)

3. Summary (Text)

4. Domain (from multiple-option picklist)

5. Sub Domain (from multiple-option picklist)

6. Country (from multiple-option picklist)

7. Category (from multiple-option picklist)

8. Notes/Comments (Text)

Citation data

9. Author (Text)

10. Title (Text)

11. Publications (Text)

12. Date (Text)

13. Distributor (Text)

14. Copyright (Text)

15. URL (Text)

16. Google Cache (Text)

Other data

17. username of writer

18. Reviewed or not (Y/N, default N)

For items 9- 16, the summary must have either a URL (i.e. it is from the web) or a title, publication and distributor (i.e. it is from a commercial provider)

Click Upload and it saves the reference and shows a Preview that the user can either Accept or Change. Accept saves the reference and return a blank reference entry screen (with the message ‘reference successfully submitted’); Change allows the user to edit it.

5. Summary editor and review facility

Each summary needs to be reviewed by an editor before it can be accepted. This page is much the same as the summary upload facility, ie, it has all the same fields and a similar layout, but also has:

19. Comments (Text)

20. Clarity and Accuracy (radio button, default off)

21. Style and Grammar (radio button, default off)

22. Other (radio button, default off)

23. Points (Number, integer, default 0)

The Editor can amend any of the summary’s information. When the Editor clicks Accept/Next, a script marks the summary as accepted and saves the changes, then loads the next summary that hasn’t been reviewed. If the Editor clicks Reject, the script marks it as reviewed, saves any changes and adds a rejected marker, so that the summary is not included in those displayed on the web.
