We need a creative mechanical engineer or designer to develop a CONCEPT drawing of a mechanism for automating the OD (outside diameter) measurement of pacemaker lead. There are two lengths -- 600 mm and 900 mm long. We would like to measure the OD every 1 mm.
Your job is design a mechanism that will translate the part through the laser micrometer measurement window. We will be using a Zumbach ODAC 15XY or ODAC 18XY laser micrometer for this job. The mechanism needs to be computer controllable. For example -- if you use a stepper motor it needs to include a stepper motor controller that a computer could communicate with via RS232, Ethernet, or Voltage, etc. The part needs to be under tension so a method of attaching to both ends (the lead end to draw it thru) and to provide tension is required. Other more suitable mechanisms for translating the pacemaker lead thru the measurement window are allowable and encouraged.
We will be handling the software side -- we have an existing product (measureOD(R)) that is capable of measuring wire diameters using laser micrometers on a continuous basis. We will be modifying this program for discrete lengths.

The 900 mm lead is long (over 30 inches long) and space is a premium so make sure you take advantage of up/down space rather than horizontal. We do NOT want to take up 1,800 mm of horizontal length
