My need here is to implement a small C++/Java application. (But actually the program for solution 1 could be written in any language). Currently we have a java program, it writes to a printer on LPT1 the (parallel port). Currently [url removed, login to view] RXTX technologies do not seem to enable parallel port technologies to write/read from the LPT1 correctly (this has been tested by us). Currently the byteinputstream required to receive status messages (for checking if printer is ready for more data etc) does not appear to be implemented in RXTX. Hence this project would probably suit someone who knows how the parallel port works.
If you can write a cost effective solution that works well, I'm happy to listen to any suggestions.
Some solutions that might work.
1. To write a small program, that listens on TCP/IP port (probably localport is enough 127.0.0.1) (A) for bytestreams, which it writes directly to the printer, on port (B) it publishes printer status messages. We would write out bytestreams to port (A) from our Java program and add a Byte Stream Listener onto port (B). Your application would simply write any bytes to the printer (which lives on LPT1), which it recieves on port (A) all formatting of data etc would be done in the Java program, you just post any data recieved on port (A) directly with to the printer, no control codes needed and report any printer status messages back to us on port (B).
2. To get working a set of Java classes that I can easily incoporate into my program using one of the JNI technologies. This needs to work on Win32 with Parallel port; both writing of bytestreams and reading status messages.
3. To get [url removed, login to view] (RXTX) to work. This needs to work on Win32 with Parallel port; both writing of bytestreams and reading status messages.
In all cases code needs to be clearly written and commented. For programmers proposing a non-native program solution (i.e) not a win32 executable, you will need to package up required libraries to make a win32 (and preferably a linux run-time).
