I need a cybersecurity professional to complete a Security Operations Center (SOC) lab project in a virtual environment consisting of a Kali Linux attacker machine, a victim machine, and a monitoring machine. The project requires configuring Splunk and log forwarding, installing and configuring Snort IDS, creating custom detection rules, integrating Snort alerts with Splunk, using TestMyNIDS to generate and detect multiple attacks, setting up SSH and performing a Hydra brute-force attack with corresponding Snort detection rules, installing and using Greenbone/OpenVAS to perform a vulnerability scan, and capturing screenshots proving each stage works correctly. The final deliverables should include the fully configured lab environment, evidence/screenshots for all tasks, and a well-structured 15–20 page report (maximum 3,000 words) containing an introduction, step-by-step explanations with screenshots, and a conclusion. Experience with Splunk, Snort, Kali Linux, Hydra, Greenbone/OpenVAS, VMware or VirtualBox, Linux administration, and SOC/SIEM concepts is required. Please provide your estimated completion time, pricing, and examples of similar projects you have completed.

Hello I can share a step-by-step Splunk installation and configuration user guide with you. However, if you use Splunk on a trial license, the license will expire after 60 days. Alternatively, I can help you complete the entire lab using Wazuh, which is open-source and free. All the required tasks can be implemented on Wazuh as well. Also integrate virus total and miter attack with wazuh. If needed, I can also share the Splunk user guide. I have guides and screenshots available for both Splunk and Wazuh. The Splunk guide includes lab setup and log forwarder configuration only, without any use cases. The Wazuh guide includes the setup along with a few sample use cases. Please note that these guides and screenshots are part of a paid service. Environment must be provided by you. Thanks

Hi there, It looks like you're looking for someone to set up a virtual Security Operations Center (SOC) lab, which includes various components like Kali Linux, Splunk, and Snort. This project involves configuring these systems to effectively monitor and respond to security threats, along with creating a detailed report to document each step. With 4+ years of experience in cybersecurity, I have a solid understanding of these technologies and how they work together. I’d set up the lab environment, ensuring each machine communicates properly, and I’d develop custom detection rules for Snort to capture any malicious activity. I would also generate attack scenarios using TestMyNIDS and document everything with clear screenshots and explanations for your report. Could you clarify if you have any specific requirements for the format of the final report? Best regards, Arslan Shahid

Having clocked over a decade of experience in software development, I've become especially skilled in Linux administration, which will definitely come into play for this Security Operations Center (SOC) lab project. My proficiency with tools like Kali Linux, Splunk, Snort IDS, Hydra, Greenbone/OpenVAS, along with my understanding of SOC/SIEM concepts, would be invaluable in executing this project to the highest standard. And despite not having an explicit cybersecurity background, my multifaceted skill set and adaptability have helped me successfully complete similar projects - no glitter but solid execution. Regarding your other project requirements: I'm quite familiar with TestMyNIDS, its necessary configurations and functionalities. So generating multiple attacks and effectively detecting them would be a comfortable task for me. Additionally, the experience we have integrating Snort alerts with applications like Splunk assures our ability to deliver exactly what you expect from this project. We are well aware of the significance of documentation as a part of any successful project delivery. Our team is capable of creating comprehensive reports containing detailed step-by-step explanations with accompanying screenshots - all neatly summarized within stipulated word counts. This setup not only gives you concrete evidence but also provides a clear insight into our execution process.

Rough numbers above are placeholders, we'll pin down a firm price and timeline once we know a bit more about your setup and timeline. This is a full SOC lab build in a virtual environment, three machines (Kali attacker, victim, monitor), wired together with real tools doing real detection. You want working Splunk ingestion, Snort catching actual attack traffic, OpenVAS finding vulnerabilities, and solid screenshots plus a clean 15-20 page report that walks through every step. Not just "it worked" but showing the evidence. Here's how we'd approach this: - Lab setup: Spin up the three-VM environment in VirtualBox/VMware, configure network interfaces so Kali can reach the victim and the monitor can see all traffic. Get host-only and bridged adapters sorted before touching any tools. - Splunk and log forwarding: Install Splunk on the monitoring machine, configure Universal Forwarder on the victim, verify events are flowing in before layering anything on top. - Snort IDS and custom rules: Install Snort on the monitoring machine, write custom rules targeting the specific attack signatures (Hydra SSH brute-force, NIDS test traffic), confirm alerts fire in real time. - Attack simulation: Run TestMyNIDS to validate the ruleset catches known patterns, then set up SSH on the victim and execute a Hydra dictionary attack from Kali, confirm the Snort alert triggers and the event lands in Splunk. - OpenVAS scan: Install Greenbone/OpenVAS, run a full scan against the victim machine, pull the vulnerability report, screenshot the key findings. - Report: Write the 15-20 page document with intro, step-by-step breakdown with annotated screenshots for each stage, and a short conclusion. Clean structure, under 3,000 words. After a quick chat to confirm your environment preferences (VMware vs VirtualBox, any pre-existing configs) we'll send a proper written proposal with milestones and a firm price. Want to jump on a quick call this week to walk through it? Best, 96 Studio

Greetings, I see you’re looking for a cybersecurity professional to set up a virtual SOC lab that includes configuring various tools like Splunk and Snort. In my previous role at a smaller cybersecurity firm, I worked on a project where we established a similar lab environment, utilizing Kali Linux, and implementing intrusion detection systems. I have hands-on experience with setting up Splunk for log management, creating custom detection rules in Snort, and conducting vulnerability scans with OpenVAS. My approach would involve carefully configuring each machine, ensuring seamless integration between systems, and documenting every step with clear screenshots. I understand the importance of a well-structured report, so I'd provide detailed explanations to accompany the visuals. This comprehensive setup not only demonstrates the functionality of the lab but also serves as a valuable learning resource.
