Youth Health Data Visualization

Overview:

Boston Public Schools (BPS) administers the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), a national public health surveillance tool designed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The goal of the survey is to understand the prevalence of behaviors among youth related to the leading causes of death and illness. Results from this survey help to inform policies, programs, and funding decisions locally and nationally. The survey data and relevant findings are visualized and shared with the community through online and printed reports and community presentations. The intention of the reports is to inform future wellness-related interventions and spark community conversation and collaboration to better serve Boston youth. This communication is targeted at a lay audience with limited data literacy. BPS Office of Health & Wellness is looking to hire a graphic designer with data visualization experience to help them in the process of developing the story and visuals for both the middle school and high school YRBS reports.

Deliverables:

High School Fact Report: This document will tell a data-driven story of the 2021 Boston YRBS. This document will exist in both digital and print formats. Individual pages might include charts, iconography, quotations, and other text. The document will be 20 pages, front and back. The reports will be similar to the previous year’s report (see example here: [login to view URL]) with some additional improvements.

Middle School Report: This document will match the style and format of the high school document (see example here: [login to view URL])

For each deliverable the graphic designer will provide:

An initial draft of several pages for review (with the goal of aligning on a look and feel for the document)

A final PDF prepared for digital use

A final print-ready file

Individual graphics for all major charts or data points presented in the reports (.PNG and .EPS file formats)

The Graphic Designer will receive:

Guidance on brand standards, including but not limited to: colors, fonts/typography, iconography, etc; if needed, we will discuss the purchase of any design assets

A spreadsheet that contains all of the edited text and the data to be displayed

A presentation or document that includes all text and references to data for inclusion. This document should be proofed and considered final.

Data visualization mood board

Any imagery that is approved for use and owned by BPS

Timely feedback and consolidated edits on each draft

Tentative Schedule:

July 2022: High School Data Story Discovery–explore data design options and determine the best visuals to use when telling the story of middle school and high school risk behavior across 6 categories. Share preliminary designs and key takeaways. Once a product outline has been created, BPS staff will be responsible for copywriting, proofreading, and providing relevant data for reporting.

July - August 2022: High School Factsheet Development–Graphic Designer will provide a designed section of the report to give BPS staff a feel for the direction of the design and work with them through needed design revisions. Using the narrative and data provided, the designer will build a full draft of the report based on the revised design mock-up.

September - October 2022: Middle School Factsheet Development–Graphic Designer will provide a designed page from the factsheet to give staff a feel for the direction of the design and work with staff through needed design revisions. Using the narrative and data provided, the designer will build a full draft of the report based on the revised design mock-up.

To express interest, please share your portfolio/ relevant samples and budget proposals by July 15. Applicants will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
