This is a project from a 'layman', so I apologise if it, or the terminology I use, sounds stupid :-)
I need an LED (preferably Surface Mount) - or something similar - that would generate a beam that would be almost laser-like in its precision; in that the beam would remain narrow. Essentially, What I require is a means of projecting a beam upwards, through an aperture of approx 2mm., so that, from a height of between 1.3 m and 1.6 metres above the aperture, the beam would be visible ONLY when viewed from directly above that aperture - and any movement away from that position would render the beam invisible? If it is not possible to fix the viewing position with that degree of precision, to what degree could movement be limited at those heights ? The distance between LED and aperture would be approx 10mm. See attached sketch. Regards, Martin.

You'll need at least one lens there to do it, but a laser led from a CD/DVD or a laser pointer would be better anyway. Those leds are not SMD components, but their heights are less than 10mm in any case.
I can do this cheap and fast if you can be a little flexible with the 10mm height - say 13mm. :) If that's not an option, contact me, and we can work something else out - I have other options.
