Hello, should not be an issue, just connected an TIVA ARM to microchip WiFi module (WiFly) and before that connected ATMEGA328 at lower speed the same.

Hello, I am an Embedded Systems Engineer with experience in AVR, PIC and Arduino based systems. I believe you want to interface Atmega328 with ESP8266 to establish wireless communication with some external device. Interfacing of ESP8266 can be done via AT commands. Please provide more details about all tasks to be completed other than this basic communication and we can discuss further. Regards, Arun Furtado

I have made similar communication system with HC-05 bluetooth module, Its easy just we have to send http req and implement a server at device side that will give response . Also we could use tcp server client communication to achieve this.
