Embedded system project

As engineers, our role is to solve problems in society. The final project allows students to develop entrepreneurial mindset learning (EML) through project-based learning (PBL).

The final project is a team project for up to 8 students. First, as a team, identify a problem in society, research how it is currently being addressed, include the associated costs, and size the market. Second, with your team, develop a new way to address the problem using an embedded system. Third, use the TM4C123 Launchpad to implement an embedded system that can help solve the problem you identified. Next, imagine that you decide to turn your embedded system into a business. You will then pitch your idea, which means that you will develop a video and a presentation that will explain the problem, how you plan to solve it, demonstrate a working prototype or simulation and estimate the market size and other metrics to attract investors for your business.

The main goal of the final project is for students to design, program, and simulate an embedded system. Students will also design the printed circuit board for their prototype. The secondary goal is for students to develop EML and PBL through project management skills, entrepreneurial skills, good technical communication skills, and teamwork skills working with students from diverse background. The third goal is for students to develop an understanding of the need to engage in self-directed continuing professional development by encouraging students to interface the microcontroller with digital logic device (sensors, or actuator) of their choice.

It is your responsibility to purchase the necessary parts and to build a system that is cost competitive.

Your project should include at minimum:

• One external input

• one external output

• a message communicated either via the LCD display or through UART

• KeilUvision C and .uvision files

• Minimally intrusive debugging instrument

• PCB schematic, layout and 3D model files

• All the gerber files for PCB fabrication

• Multisim simulation for the PCB ( can use Multisim to simulate the circuit for the external i/o)

Your team will write a project report. Your report should include at minimum:

• Definition of a problem that you wish to solve using embedded systems. Include at least 1 reference.

• Background information on the application and societal/global context. Clearly explain the problem, how it is currently being solved, how you propose to solve the problem with the TM4C123. Include a cost comparison and at least 2 references.

• Project plan showing the main tasks, associated dates, and projected cost estimate.

• Project requirements including role and contribution of each team members. The project requirement document must follow the IEEE format per the e-book.

• pseudocode

• flowchart or state transition graph (if using a finite state machine). Hand-drawing will not be accepted.

• electronic drawings of the circuit

• Multisim simulation for the PCB ( can use Multisim to simulate the circuit for the external i/o)

• A complete description of the procedure such that someone else can reproduce your project. This procedure must be similar to the procedure section that in the weekly lab experiments. Make sure to note what you have learned, tricks and tips.

• PCB schematic, layout and 3D model files

• Business pitch

• All the files (gerber etc) for PCB fabrication with the LPFK PCB Router

• Pictures of your system

• Experimental results and actual project costs.

• Conclusion
