You are assigned to design two type of ADC;

• an 8-level linear ADC

• an 8-level non-linear ADC

The input to ADC is the absolute value of a sinusoidal waveform (you can pick the frequency). The amplitude of the input signal can have two different values:

• Small signal amplitude, for example from 0 to 0.1 V

• Large signal amplitude, for example from 0.4 to 1 V

• Tasks:

a) Design an 8-level linear ADC with VFS=1 Volt

b) Simulate your linear ADC; the input is a sinusoidal waveform with an amplitude range from VL to 1 Volts (VL is different for each student)

c) Simulate your linear ADC; the second input is a sinusoidal waveform with an amplitude range from VS1 to VS2 (VS1 and VS2 are different for each student)

d) Design an 8-bit non-linear ADC with VFS=1 Volt. The non-linearity of your ADC should be designed such that it gives the least amount of error for both inputs (small and large signals) for the input amplitudes specified in (b) and (c).

e) Simulate your non-linear ADC; the input is the same as (b)

f) Simulate your non-linear ADC; the input is the same as (c)

• Deliverables:

1. The linear ADC (in the form of “.m” file, simulink file, etc) with the quantization steps completely and clearly documented (a graph helps)

2. Show the input, output, and quantization error signals for (b)

3. Show the input, output, and quantization error signals for (c)

4. The non-linear ADC (in the form of “.m” file, simulink file, etc) with the quantization steps completely and clearly documented (a graph helps)

5. Show the input, output, and quantization error signals for (e)

6. Show the input, output, and quantization error signals for (f)

7. Compare the quantization errors from (b) and (e)

8. Compare the quantization errors from (c) and (f)

9. Prove mathematically that your designed non-linear ADC provides less quantization error than your linear ADC
