need help with geoserver

Hi i have installed postgresql with postgis. i uploaded 5 shape files to postgis, then i tried to add a postgis layer to QGIS and it works fine, but what i try to accomplish is to publish the same postgis layer to geoserver, and have troubles with that. need someone who expertise both with postgis and geoserver.
