I am looking for someone who will make illustrations for a bundle of short stories I wrote.
The stories have a children s book-like feeling, but are actually written for adults. The idea is to cover mature questions/hurts/situations in a childlike style. The stories are spiritual and philosophical, created to encourage weary hearts in a weary world.
What I seek in the illustrator is that he or she is able and willing to communicate these values in the illustrations. This may result in thoughtful, warm, encouraging, touching and 'cute' illustrations in a style that attract young and old alike.
I have a preference for organic-feeling illustrations. For example illustrations handmade with ink and watercolor. But i am not fixed on 1 style. It is up to you and your creativity to present your organic feel and hit the mark (for another example of what i like see the attached file).
I look for about 10 larger illustrations, a cover, and some (10?) small artifacts like freestanding trees, a flower, a road, a bee, clouds etc. These can be placed here and there to create the feeling of a visual sequence.
The illustrations will be inspired by some key-stories in the bundle.
I am new to this and may at first create an e-book, and if it is a success it may find its way printed.
Below I present a key story. You can see if it may be something for you.
Feel free to comment or ask questions.
From underneath the leafy canopy a voice came.
' Why wont you help me? Why must i take this course through life?'
Creater pushed some leaves aside and looked upon a cocoon in which a butterfly is still hiding.
Creator asked surprised: 'Why are you still in this cocoon?' You should have been on your way by now, flying unrestrained in the wide world as a beautiful butterfly.'
'I simply dont dare to come out,' answered the butterfly from the closed cocoon.
'I wish I still was a caterpillar; I could crawl, eat what i want and I would know how to deal with life. Not long ago my life stood suddenly upside down. Now i am here in this cocoon. I dont know what is waiting for me out there. I dont dare to break free.'
'But you are the bravest of all!' says Creator, the Author of life, in a heartwarming way.
'As a caterpillar you ate and grew, and when you had the idea that you knew quite a lot the real journey started. Out of the blue you stagnated, everything became quiet and you were covered by a wonderful golden glow, your metamorphosis started. You came so far! This is not the time to quit.'
'To be honest, i dont like it,' says the butterfly. 'If it would be possible i would live life like a caterpillar again.'
Creator smiles. 'Your strength lays in the joy of transition, but simultaneously that same transition is your greatest fear. You fear what you dont know.'
'Thats right,' says the caterpillar, 'and I long again for the succulent leaves to chew on!'
'I am afraid you wont like the former nourishment anymore.' Says creator. 'You wont even care to remember it once you go forward.'
The butterfly is shocked! 'You mean that i wont eat from those delicious grean leaves anymore?'
Creator answers: 'The butterfly who flies, cant be worried about the former things. That weight is not suitable for the butterfly. Everything you ate before this day was the propulsion to get you ready for what is next. It wont help you to stand still and ponder on what has been.'
It is silent now in the cocoon.
Creator continues: 'Brave butterfly. So wonderful and different is the world outside the cocoon! Colors as you have never seen them and your wings will bring you there where you never could go before. It is a freedom which makes your heart bounce. You will drink from the sweet heavenly nectar and dance on the wind!
But to be able to enter this new life you will have to lay down what you know as certainty.'
