This document describes the Assignment 1 for Computer Techniques.
Engineers design things that will be built. In order to build a design it must be visualised, analysed and communicated. In this assignment, 3D models of individual components (parts) will be made and they will be combined into assemblies to create a design.
The assignment is intended to provide students with the opportunity to put into practice all they have learnt in the first half of the course.
This document is a kind of specification of the required end product that will be generated by implementing the assignment. Like many specifications, it is written in English and hence will contain some imperfectly specified parts. In some cases students will need to seek clarification. In other cases students will need to make their own decisions about the details of their implementation that are consistent with the overall guidance provided in this document.
The design task for 2011 will be to undertake an aspect of the 2011 Engineers Without Borders Challenge – Pitchandikulam Forest, India. Full details of the Challenge are provided at [url removed, login to view]
The assignment will be an individual submission. Students must select an engineering design task topic from the following:-
 A classroom (at least 6m x 4m and 1 m off the ground, that is lockable at night)  Design is to include a hinged door and enough detail (desks, chairs, board, and so on) to
Each design must include at least 5 parts that you model and an assembly. It is to be animated (e.g. doors opening, wheels turning, chicken moving up ramp or components assembling together etc).
In your design you can use additional components from the SolidWorks toolbox and appropriate models such as people from libraries of CAD models such as 3D Content Central ([url removed, login to view] ).
Weekly practicals and the engineering design task will be submitted in a CD with an assignment cover sheet. Please do not forget to write your name!
All of the weekly practicals will be included in the CD.
Engineering Design Task:
The topic and details for the design task were described in the previous section.
 Introduction  a description of the design (with up to 500 words of text and can include images to help
explain)  a drawing register listing all drawings, in a format as follows:-
 Your SolidWorks model files – parts, assemblies and drawings (you can create and use as many parts as you deem necessary).
 5 individual detailed part drawings (including dimensions, mass, materials, surface finish and tolerances), in pdf format.
 An assembly drawing that includes a section view of your model and provides overall dimensions such as height, width etc. (including a bill of materials), in pdf format.
 An exploded view assembly drawing of your model (including a bill of materials), in pdf format.
 A photo rendered image of your model that includes the use of a decal using a plain background, in jpg format (maximum size of 1MB).
 A photo rendered image of your model that includes the use of a decal using an appropriate rural background image, in jpg format (maximum size of 1MB).
