I'm officially a composition student, but on my free time I'm currently developing my own science fiction IP. My dream is that the visual style of possible manifestations of this IP, such as animation or graphic novels, would be so distinctive so as to make it as much a vital part of the IP, as the plot is. In other words, my measure of success is if anyone draws a fan work "in the style of [IP]".
So far my art direction philosophy has been to provide the various designers with various reference pictures and written descriptions, and hope that they would together (even though they are not aware of each others, as I'm communicating with everyone through email) reach a somewhat unified style. On my part this has worked so far, but as I am not a visual artist, and unfortunately not that well read, I'm having great difficulties describing how the characters should look.
I therefore started thinking that perhaps it would be better, and ultimately much more economical, to have a design document worked out beforehand, which the designers could follow, instead of having them working it out themselves, especially since they are not, at this moment, working as a team.
My hope is then, that I, despite my limited budget, can find an art director or illustrator that would be willing to help by researching and creating a distinct visual style for at least characters, and then make a document that describe how characters should be drawn according to this style. If the economy allows it, descriptions of how the surroundings and props should be drawn, coloured and shaded would also be much appreciated.
Without the need of NDA's being signed, I can at once reveal that I'm currently looking at combining eastern and western influences, for characters like for instance how Peter Chung combined influences from Egon Schiele with anime influences, and for surroundings and props (can also influence characters) for instance combining the aesthetics of embellishments, patterns and ornaments found in buddhist and hindu art from temples from India, Thailand, China etc, with the rather cold and angular aesthetics of sci-fi, as well as other stylistic expressions.
I would like the end result to be appealing to teenagers and young adults of both genders, and to also be possible to recreate in 3D, like for instance PVC figures.
I would assume that you as an art director would have a great knowledge of different stylistic expressions, and it would also be a great advantage if you were well versed in the english language.
So to sum it up:
I'm looking for an art director or illustrator with broad knowledge of character design in eastern and/or western styles, that can:
1) define a visual style distinct enough to be connected to the IP should it find any success, and
2) create a document that can teach other designers how to replicate this style.
Please provide a link to a portfolio, or other samples of your work.
The chosen bidder will of course receive a contract, an NDA, and all the information he or she needs to be able to get a picture of what I'm trying to tell with the story.
I hope you will find this project interesting!
