I am a farmer and gardener as well as a graphic designer / illustrator (available for hire through this site). There is severe shortage of good software out there for managing our whole farm. Having just returned from the 2010 winter NOFA-NY conference (Northeast Organic Farming Association) it is quite clear from the conversations that i had with attendees that there is a great need for this project to happen. Additionally, there is a huge installed base of Mac users among organic growers.
I am seeking a partner with exceptional programming skills who is skilled with OSX programming (Cocoa).
I envision a collaborative process wherein I serve as chief designer of the application.
Other collaborators may include an additional graphic designer to work on iconography and interface design.
The basic idea for this software is to avoid the typical database front end with lots of form-like blocks to fill out. That is how PC people expect to do things - and it is never fun to use and doesn't inspire creativity. This software should invite the user to explore various ideas on his/her farm/garden and provide quick feedback about the appropriateness of the choices being made for the farmers region / weather / landscape etc..
The application that most closely represents what i have in mind is Apple's Garageband. But instead if dragging instruments to the multi-track timeline, the user is picking among countless vegetables, flowers, animals and even building projects from a library. These are dropped in to the timeline and then certain parameters are set based on local growing criteria.
I have many many well thought out ideas to share with the successful bidder. We would need to meet face to face initially to begin the project and then periodically throughout development.
I am very serious about the potential for success with this project.
Also, we need someone to help develop the iPhone app of course!! (to collect field data, photos etc, then sync to the Mac app.)
and perhaps have a web component / syncing.
You are bidding for an initial basic working prototype. I realize that full development of the app. will cost far more than the "large project" classification. This may develop into a "full time" offer.
That's all for now.
