We run a media processing microservice consisting of Ruby, RMagick, Sinatra, Puma, AWS Beanstalk, AWS S3, AWS Cloudfront and AWS RDS.
In addition to storing media objects (images and documents), the service can process and deliver images at any size requirement.
The database is purely used for allocating an ID and storing information about the image. It is not used during image retrieval or processing; everything the app needs to know about the image is contained in the URL.
We are currently considering an upgrade to our app, specifically the version of Ruby and Puma, and a switch from RMagick to ruby-vips (libvips). As an alternative to this upgrade we are now also considering a complete change from a fully managed ruby app to AWS API Gateway + Lambda.
We're looking for interested parties that have had experience in AWS API Gateway, AWS Lambda and (specifically) using these to process images. More information can be provided by us on how the existing app runs, which will give you an idea on what will be expected from the Lambda function. The language used for the Lambda function isn't a high priority, however doing so in Ruby would be a huge plus.
