Release a data file

We have Dell Power Edge R720 with a 2TB RAID system running VMWare ESXi 5.1 and Microsoft Server 2008R2 on three virtual machines – a small business server, an SQL server and a terminal server. We are running Microsoft Office 2010 and GFI email archiving.

On the SQL server the 2013 email archive file is 400GB and I am trying to remove it to a local backup device. I have detached it from the GFI email archiver however when I attempt to remove it I get the error “The action can’t be completed because the file is open in another program”.

I have determined by using Process Explorer that SQL Server has a handle on the file and is stopping the removal. I could remove the handle via Process Explorer but that seems a bit ugly. How do I remove the link to SQL Server so that I can move the file to the local backup?

I will want you to access my computer using Teamviewer etc or just tell me how to do it and I can show you my screen via a Whatsapp video call.

I will want to record the steps by taking screen shots so I can repeat this process.
