We (Wildtracks) run the Primate Rehabilitation Centre in Belize, and lead endangered species conservation and biodiversity planning for the country. We deal with two endangered species of monkey (Yucatan black handed spider monkeys and Yucatan black howler monkeys), and are conducting a national survey of their populations. We want to encourage citizen science reporting of monkey sightings. This app would be downloaded and used by participants on their smart phones (as many types of phone as possible). It would need to be very simple and user friendly, using something like google maps, with recording of basic statistics through a data entry form. This would include maybe ten fields - species, number of individuals, number of adults, males, females, young, notes on behaviour etc., and uploading 1 to 4 photos of the monkeys and the forest type. There would also need to be a line for reporting illegal monkey pets. The data would then need to be collected in a database or as raw data, to be accessed by us for analysis at our end. The larger project is sponsored by LUSH cosmetics and the Prince Bernhardt Nature Fund, but being conservation, the budget availability for the app, unfortunately, isn't brilliant.
We have photos, logo etc. that can be used in the design, though it needs to be functional before beauty - though good design will help to better engage the end users.
Assuming this works well (which it should), it will be showcased as an important use of citizen science in the conservation of endangered species, with acknowledgement of the app designer.
To find out more about us, our website is www.wildtracksbelize.org. We should warn you that we know very little about app design... but can see its importance as a citizen science tool!
