"Sandbox project" linking MS Access with Firebird databaseOur business uses software built around a Firebird database. It is probably very powerful but it is complex to use and we do not have an IT department. As the CFO, I would like to experiment (and I have started a bit already) with building linkages to the Firebird database and then building queries and reports in Access that I can use to analyze the data. I'm probably described as a low lever "power user" of Excel, but only have a rudimentary knowledge of Access.
I believe Access is the better tool to build forms and reports for use in our business. We would be similar to a automotive repair shop, but we work with aircraft rather than cars, so there is lots of detail involved in every work order.
I'm hoping I can find a consultant that can help me build some user friendly forms and reports that utilize the live data from our Firebird database (I have had some success with this so far) and are easier and more flexible than the highly structured enterprise software we use for all our our basic functions (and sits on top of the Firebird database). The work would initially be small bits (experimenting with establishing data links) and if we can communicate well, move on to simple forms and reports. If the work is wildly successful, there could be more hours, but I would think the max budget would be $5,000, maybe 10,000 per year. I would guess that the work would be described by an experienced Access developer as basic stuff. Good communication skills would be a must.
