Scottish football club website script

Automated Scottish football newsgathering script proposal

Background:

At present, there are 42 professional football clubs in Scotland, each with their own individual club website.

The websites are produced by professional web hosting companies, private individuals, fans, or the clubs themselves. Each website is unique in both its construct, design and frequency of updates.

It takes time to scour the club websites for news or information updates.

Proposal:

This document proposes the development of an automated web script which would scour each of the club websites at proscribed intervals for recent news, and compile it into a useful format for online use.

Method:

Each of the club websites is located on normal webspace, although some club websites are protected by a username/password registration system.

Some of the websites prevent direct copying of text by use of JavaScript of other HTML code.

This proposal recommends an automated script system which would:

- at a pre-determined interval, apply an HTTP GET to each club website

- where necessary, automatically login to the website using a pre-registered username and password

- perform an automatic check against the last HTTP GET for changes in club news or other information pages

- copy the updated headline(s) and news

- publish the headline(s) and news to a BBC Intranet website

- make the text available in a suitable format for online use (ie. So that it can be easily copied and pasted).

Caveats:

- A manual check facility would be necessary in order that the user could apply a check outside of the proscribed automated check times.

- The script would require unique knowledge of each individual club website, and a maintenance facility in order to account for changes in the design or construct of each of the club websites or changes in URL names

- News would be kept for 48 hours, displayed in a reverse-chronological order (ie. Most recent news at the top of the page).
