What we are after is a shell script that can easily tie into an AppleScript, perhaps.
I am familiar with the 'last' and 'finger' commands and that may be what we need.
It needs to work like this:
1. the command is entered or pasted
2. generates a login/logout record of all users for that machine, minus the reboot & shutdown users
3. comes in a spreadsheet friendly format.
A little background:
All machines are tied to an open (active) directory for login on a Mac OS X server.
We would prefer for the output to come in an e-mail using the sendmail command.
Script can run with or without root permissions.
This script will run on the local machine directly.
So to sum up, we want to be able to run this script, have it gather the information needed (login and logout times only --- for each active directory user) and send as an email to a designated address in a spreadsheet friendly format.
We would like to see this wrapped in an applescript application so we can choose date ranges and execute.
Please ask any questions if clarification is needed.
At the end of the day, we will be using this to calculate payroll. The login/logout times will be the timestamps for in and out for shifts and breaks. Our employees will login to clock in, logout to clock out. If this can also add the hours up, that would be great.

Think I'm pretty good at scripting. Working for a mojor telecom company & handing it's projects. Trying freelancing as a part time. The task you have isn't big & I can finish in few days. Thanks!
