I have a form that outputs pricing for a set of products I sell. I would like the form output to be sent via as a PDF attachment.
I already have the form output being sent as a formatted HTML mail. I also already have each price quote stored as a unique link/URL, so it can be called at any time.
We have tried a few things via PHP but most of the tools want some level of insecure permissions, like SUID, which we won't do. Having PHP sending anything via email is also inviting trouble.
So sending a link in the email to the customers that can generate a PDF might be less of an issue.
This might be better done as a back-end cron job in PERL. PERL look every 3 minutes in cron for a new quote, bring up the URL link of the quote, and generate a PDF and send it.

I would use Ruby and background job queue to generate de PDF and send the email. I have 3 years of experience developing web applications and I have faced the problem you describe a few times.
