post visualization in home page

Good afternoon.

I'm looking for completing a query post script that is already working in my home page.

The actual code makes a random query and divides the results in 2 containers. In the first container shows 1 post, with it's post thumbnail, title and content and the second container shows 8 posts, with it's thumbnails too ( but smaller size ).

The thumbnails on the top container are set to FALSE in the [url removed, login to view] file, this means that each post thumbnail has different dimmensions in pixels, while the thumbnails in the bottom area are set to TRUE so they are all cropped at the same size.

This means that in the TOP container, when the thumbnail has vertical proportions leaves a white empty area on it's right side that I don't like, and I want to fill this white area with another post thumbnail, IF IT FITS.

I have thought about a condition to introduce in this random posts query but I need somebody to code it.
