This project is quite simple for someone with a good knowledge of PHP and MySQL and basic CSS/HTML – I have detailed my requirements so it may seem complicated but really it isn’t that difficult and if planned well should be relatively simple.
What I want is a website which is essentially a homepage containing a story which is displayed for 24 hours and then automatically changes to the next story at midnight.
I want to be able to log in to an admin panel e.g. [url removed, login to view] and simply enter a password. From there I can enter a story and select (ideally from a drop down menu) the date I want this story to be displayed (showing dates for 2 weeks ahead, excluding dates which already have had a story entered, plus the option to manually enter a date further ahead). I would need to enter the following bits of information: Title, Story, Cost, Name, Author, Born, Date of Birth (Date format), Died (Date format), and email address (this is not for display purposes however).
On the front page I would like a simple layout: Title at the top with the story underneath. And in a box to the right of the story a box containing a profile saying: Cost, Name, Born, Date of Birth. The author and died fields should be optional when entered via admin and if left blank not displayed here, but if entered should have further values in the profile.
I would also like to be able to display up to 2 photos with the story, with an upload option in the admin panel. With the stories uploaded I should be able to add thumbnails into the story for example when entering the story in the admin panel using code with something like <> (this is just an example, anything clear will do) which will insert a thumbnail of the picture into the text which can be clicked on for a larger image which will pop up in a new window with a description underneath, a text box to enter a photo description should be included when the image is uploaded. If you can make it resize the uploaded images to a reasonable size automatically and create thumbnails that would be great, otherwise I can manually resize the images and upload a separately created thumbnail and larger image – please specify which method you would like to use – you could quote less for the manual approach but I may be tempted to slightly more for the easier option.
At the bottom of the story I would like a link saying Comments with the number of comments on the story in brackets after, e.g. Comments (38). When this is clicked on a new page showing all the comments on that day’s story should be opened, almost like a guestbook. All the comments should be listed, but if there are a lot it should be separated into pages with 50 comments per page. At the top of the page should be the option to add your own comments, the comment variables are: Name, Location, Website, Date and Time the comment was made and the comment itself. There should be a censor so words which I don’t think should be included are rejected and also there should be an option to delete specific comments in the admin panel.
General admin options to make changes and deletions would be nice, for example the option to change a story which has yet to be displayed on the site, but I don’t mind if for easiness of programming you simply provide the option to delete the whole story so I can re enter it as though it hadn’t been entered. Also basic provisions should be taken so that the site won’t fail, for example if no story has been created for a specific date and that date comes around there will merely be a message on the page explaining this rather than the whole site falling apart!
When a new story is automatically displayed on the home page at midnight I would like a counter which counts the number of times the story is viewed, I do not require any complicated statistics or anything like that, just to know how many times the story has been viewed. At midnight when the story ends I would like an automated email to be sent to the email address specified for the story specifying how many times the story was viewed. I would also like an email to automatically be sent to the email address of a story when it comes on the website at midnight explaining that the story is now on and will be there for 24 hours including a link to the site.
Finally, I want an archive of all the past stories. There should be a link at the top of the home page to an archive, when this is clicked on an archive page will be displayed showing all the dates of previous stories. For example, a large heading may say 2006, then slightly smaller headings for the months, and then each date of the month listed below which can be clicked on and the story be displayed just as it was displayed on the home page on its date, with the comments at the bottom as before still with the option to add further comments. This should be search engine friendly.
Overall I am looking for a simply programmed website which is easy to understand and doesn’t put much load on the server. By keeping it simple it should be reliable, not cluttered and easier to program. If I am impressed by the program and the site turns out to be a big success which I think could well be I may be prepared to give more money – although this is no promise and depends on how satisfied I am with the script and how successful the site is, I am not prepared to disclose details of the sites purpose until it is running. I think $120 is a reasonable amount to pay for a simple project like this, I really can’t afford more than this so if you want more don’t bid as this project is not for you! I am an honest and reliable person and any questions you have I will be happy to answer and I am eager to communicate throughout the creation process. Payment by PayPal upon project completion.
