We are the customer using a first of its kind new printing application.
We are producing print via a digital process (Kodak Nexpress) and overlaying graphics onto the printed sheet via another process.
The problem we need to solve is:
Printing via the digital process can create small changes in the print size (height and width) and also changes in the skew (alignment to the paper).
This presents a problem when we attempt to print an image on top of the printed sheet, the image is drawn down from a BITMAP file, and because the printed job is slightly different in size and skew the BITMAP and image don't match.
To solve the problem we need to create 4 register marks within the BITMAP and these are also printed on the file.
As the sheet travels through the overprinting machinery a series of cameras (i believe these are CCD cameras) will detect the register marks on the printed sheet, by comparing the position of the printed register marks to those on the BITMAP a calculation can be made to adjust the length / width and adjust the angle of skew so that the BITMAP matches exactly the printed job.
The sheet has a trigger mark printed, that passes underneath a pre-existing sensor, this then instructs the XAAR inkjet heads to laydown the BITMAP on top of the printed sheet.
I can supply as much information as is required, the problem above is the nuts and bolts, there are existing systems on the market (i-cut software does something very similar, but is used for CAD cutting tables to adjust the digital cut file to match the actual digital print job).
