Considering the 10 OM decisions, your paper will be a review of issues that were caused by a failure in the production/operations management process. You will compare and contrast the current research findings with the principles and concepts presented in your Heizer, et al. textbook.
All reference sources should be from academic journals, professional trade publications, and respected business or industry magazines. Limit the use of books as sources. Do NOT use articles or sources from Wikipedia! Use references published within the past six years.
The basic rules for your research paper include:
- Follow the current Writing Style Guide for manuscripts closely.
- The paper should be 10 pages at a minimum.
- Use one-inch margins on all sides.
- Left justify all narrative.
- Use Times New Roman font, 12-point.
- Indent the first line of each paragraph one-half inch.
- Double-space everything in the paper. Do not add extra lines or spacing between paragraphs or sections of the paper.
The paper will be about the following topic.
Title: A Dreamliner or an Operational Nightmare?
Topic: Boeing's 787 Dreamliner Program
Over the years, Boeing has been characterized as one of the leading aircraft manufacturing companies. The company has recently implemented new and advanced production/operations management processes to design and build its latest models, thus maintaining a competitive advantage in the aerospace industry. For example, one of Boeing's most promising projects in recent decades was the construction of the 787 Dreamliner. This program was designed to be one of the most innovative within the company's portfolio. It used cutting-edge technologies, such as composite materials, and a "built to performance" strategy for the first time among its partners to build the aircraft. Consequently, airlines were advertised a plane that would be stronger, lighter, and could carry more passengers, consume less fuel and fly farther. However, some of Boeing's Operational Management (OM) decisions during the 787 Dreamliner program could have been better. As a result, the company faced many challenges that delayed entry into service and even jeopardized its continuation. This investigation will analyze how Boeing implemented the 10 OM decisions discussed in the textbook in order to complete the Dreamliner project and their impact.
The 10 OM decisions are design of good and services, process strategies, managing quality, location strategies, layout strategies, human resources, supply chain management, inventory management, scheduling, and maintenance.
