Scenario The Fire Department in Newtown has been restructured and is shortly opening a new headquarters building. The headquarters will house all the communications and computer systems for the Fire Department. Newtown Fire Department covers an area of 70 square kilometers and has a Chief Fire Officer who is responsible for fire fighting, rescue operations and fire prevention in that area. The Chief Fire Officer is assisted by three Watch Officers who also carry out senior duties and take responsibility for the operational duties of the Fire Department when their watch is on duty. The Fire Department has 3 watches and each is on duty for 8 hours per day. Each watch is made up of 20 firefighters and there are 3 fire engines plus one car for the Watch Officer. All vehicles require two-way communications with the control centre. The control centre has three Controllers on duty at any time who receive calls from the public, liaise with other emergency services when required and maintain contact with firefighters when they are at an incident. When fire engines are required for an emergency, the control centre sends details to a printer in the fire engine bay to provide written details of the incident. This print-out is taken by the Watch Officer as the watch leaves the building to attend the incident. The call centre also updates the firefighting staff via two way voice communication. The Fire Department also has ten civilian staff, responsible for schools liaison, press releases, personnel functions, cleaning and general administration duties. The civilians are in a separate office from the fire staff and their office includes the headquarters reception area. Newtown Department is renewing all of its networks for the new headquarters including the computer network, telephone communications and two-way communications with firefighters when they are out in the department’s vehicles. Task 01 1.1 Discuss the benefits and constraints of different networking systems types and topologies. Give a recommendation on topology to use with reasons for Fire Department. (P24.1.1) 1.2 When building up the network of fire department what types of conceptual models & standards you may consider? (Hint – Consider on OSI, TCP/IP model, IEEE 802.x) (P24.1.2) 1.3 Discuss how protocols enable the effective utilization of different networking systems. (Hint – Relate protocols with OSI model) (P24.1.3) Task 02 2.1 Discuss the role of software (client software, server software, client operating system, server operating system) and hardware (workstation -mobile, fixed, handheld, console; servers; switches; routers; cabling; hubs; repeaters; bridges; wireless devices) components on Fire Department. Give a suggestion on Operating system for workstation with list of application and suggest an Operating System for server with reasons to select. (P24.2.1) 2.2 Discuss server types you are going to implement with Fire Department. Clearly mention the requirement of each server for this network. (P24.2.2) 2.3 Select a workstation model by compare ring available models from vendors with considering network card, cabling; permissions; system bus; local-system architecture (eg memory, processor, I/O devices). (P24.2.3) Task 03 3.1 Design the networked system using a tool, (eg. MS Visio) to meet given specification on Fire Department. List down all assumptions you made on designing. (P24.3.1) 3.2 Prepare a budget on Fire Departments desired specification what you have given. (Hint- consider cost on Servers, Workstations, network components, software, user training.. etc.) (P24.3.2) - 3.3 Prepare a user evaluation form to get feedback on network functionality. (P24.3.2) 3.4 Use a bandwidth monitoring tool to monitor transfer speed on Fire Department network. Task 04 4.1 Discuss on available diagnostic tools which can use on Fire Department network to test the network functionality. (P24.4.2)
