Working individually, you will prepare an A1 size, portrait orientation, academic conference
poster, based on the presentation and analysis of a current or emerging water resource issue
which you should identify through the module content or through your own reading.
An academic poster is a graphic and textual method of presenting information. Poster sessions
are key components of major conferences, and the research presented in posters is often an
overview of ongoing research which has not yet reached the level of maturity or completeness
for an oral presentation. An effective poster balances the content (information) and the layout
(how the information is presented). To convey your information, you could use a range of visual
techniques such as illustrations or schematic diagrams, arrows or flow charts (to direct visual
attention) and cues such as bullet points, colour and design rather than just an explanation using
text.
Developing your poster
You should identify a current water resource issue or area of research which you are
interested in. This can be something which we have discussed in the sessions, or something
which you have identified in your own research. Be careful picking your topic; pick something
which can be summarised on a poster (i.e. not too big an issue which you will struggle to
convey details of on a poster); and pick something current which is supported by an academic
literature (you must demonstrate evidence of research and engagement with the literature).
You must research your topic and engage with the academic literature to understand and
summarise your topic. At Masters level I do not expect to see uncited material or nonreputable sources of information being cited.
Identify the key themes or main points of your topic which you can summarise through your
poster. For example, if you have picked a specific water resource problem, such as water
scarcity in country X, you might consider addressing the following questions through your
poster:
• What is the problem?
• What are the impacts of the problem?
• What is being done to manage the problem? Or what needs to be done?
• What is the future likely to hold for this problem?
You should design your poster to fit on to an A1, portrait orientation poster board
