Bayview Hospital has 5 buildings on the hospital campus, plus several remote clinics connected through a WAN router.
2 of the main hospital buildings have 8 floors each, with 2 wiring closets per floor. There is a main switch within each of the two main buildings. One floor switch from each floor connects to the main switch. The other switches connect either directly to the floor switch or via a daisy chain of switches, depending on which was most convenient at the time of installation.
The 3 smaller buildings (1 floor each) have two switches each connected to each other. One of these switches connects back to one of the main building switch via fiber.
All the switches in the 5 buildings are layer 2 devices.
The hospital currently runs standard office applications, plus some specialized medical imaging applications that require large amount of bandwidth. Application servers are currently located in various wiring closets without UPS or environmental controls. Staff members consistently complain about slow response times. There is severe congestion on the LAN, especially during peak hours.
The hospital has asked you to redesign the current network to improve performance and accommodate future growth. The hospital also wants to add Internet access through an ISP and provide wireless access for laptops and other mobile devices.
