Mine is a non-profit personal art project for a regional Burning Man event. This is not a micro budget but it's also not a cash cow since it's out of pocket.
Briefly, I will be creating a physical form of a meerkat at six feet tall after cutting from acrylic or casting from resin by using Pepakura to "unfold" the model. It will be lit from within.
I've used Adobe Mixamo Decimator to reduce the polygon count from 59k to 2.4k. My ideal target would be maybe 300-500 polygons. At this point, poly reduction tools will not do the job because there are specific areas I'd like to preserve (the face, some of the chest, belly) and others I don't need at all (individual fingers).
For example, I still see a lot of unnecessary detail in the shoulders, neck and chest that I think an artist can reduce. Ideally, the tail could be moved to create a third point of support.
I think this will require iterations. If this site allows it, I will attach an image of the Wavefront OBJ I am working with so you can have an understanding of the scope of work. I'll also attach an example of the look I'd like to achieve. The objective is a faceted but recognizable meerkat.
If we're successful, there will be follow up work to create low poly wings for this guy. :)
