Longwall - An underground mine (usually for coal) that uses walking roof supports.
SCADA ( Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition ). An umbrella term for the systems used to monitor and control an industrial process (such as a mine, steel mill etc.). As this is a European industry standard abbreviation, this might also be the Russian term.
Roof Support - In a longwall mine, Roof Supports are used to hold up the roof so it doesn't collapse. These aren't just timber pieces - they look like the guy on this web page ([login to view URL]) and walk forward as you mine.
Shearer - In longwall mining, this is the machine that does the actual cutting in a longwall. It rides the rail at the front of each of the Roof Supports to cut (or 'shear') coal off the coal-face.
Maingate - The side of the longwall where the air enters the longwall face. Usually considered the 'start' of the wall.
Tailgate - The side of the longwall where the air exits the longwall face. Usually considered the 'end' of the wall.
