Circuit design - low power stepper motor solution

Require a circuit designed for existing code that drives a stepper motor when buttons are pushed. I'm looking for a schematic as well as assistance in selecting a proper stepper driver and likely a boost converter. I would breadboard the circuit and test, i expect the process will require multiple iterations. I'm OK with purchasing multiple components for testing.
I expect the active components will be attiny43u, stepper driver and regulator/boost converter.
Stepper driver/circuity should be able to sleep - use minimal power when not active. I don't want to use a shield, would like stepper circuity to be able to be reproduced for a production pcb. I'd like to use a minimum amount of hardware. Do not require microstepping.
Circuit will be driving either a 3V 1A or 5.4V 800ma stepper. Prefer using the first, but will depend on how much torque can get out of the circuit. The stepper will not be active often - only spinning about 15 seconds a day on average. Stepper is not energized when not moving. Goal is 6 months battery life assuming very low power from the attiny when not in use.
Would ideally like to be able to drive all off of 2 AA alkaline batteries but I think current may be an issue. Options in order of preference are:
2AA alkaline
2AA lithium
3AA alkaline
3AA lithium
I have no hard requirements for power usage during sleep, but it seems like some stepper drivers are 20uA in sleep mode, and attiny43u uses hardly anything - so 20-30uA should be very possible.
