PLANE is seeking the skills of a talented and innovative designer (or design team) to create a brand identity for a new and innovative professional learning experience for Australian teachers called Pathways for Learning Anywhere, anytime - a Network for Educators (PLANE). PLANE requires a 2 stage process. Stage 1 will require submission of design concepts for a PLANE logo/brand identity to the PLANE program team. A contract will be negotiated with the winning submission to produce stage 2 design components.
PLANE has adopted an aeronautical theme and there has been a lot of talk about planes, airports, boarding passes and journeys. In correspondence we have used PLANE as an identifier although with social media we have used PLANEJOURNEY as just PLANE overlaps with too many other areas of interest on the net.
The journey metaphor is one we would like to continue with as it fits with the notion of learning as a lifelong journey where there is not necessarily a destination but there are achievement markers along the way.
A PLANE player should be able to see the path ahead although the path may branch and be circuitous at times, it may not be clear where each of the branches lead, although it is important to display a sense that there is a direction.
The team has had discussions about the general metaphor in relation to the virtual world component. There could be a different representation of player avatars depending upon the professional learning completed by that player.
A range of experience levels will be in place and these are Do it, Share it and Lead it. This could be visualised something like different ranks of airline staff depending upon their experience, or a completely different metaphor could be devised.
PLANE is in the early stages of development, requirements have been gathered and use case scenarios have been developed to cover a broad range of the types of experiences that might be expected from such an environment. These scenarios are being converted to functional requirements now and will incorporate game mechanics often referred to as ‘gamification’, a good example of a gamified environment is Empire Avenue. The gaming theme needs to be incorporated into the PLANE metaphor.
