Hi, I’m a scrapbooker with a client that has asked for a “digital” timeline of their scanned photos and momentoes.
Essentially, I want to use Flash to create a sliding time line that can be populated with an XML file (see below – Timeline Creator) for a family to view their photos, mementos, small clips of video and audio. You would click the thumbnail image or link and a larger version of the picture comes up. There might be multiple pictures attached to the event so it would be nice to have a scrollable line of pictures to chose from.
There is a free program called Timeline Creator [url removed, login to view] which does what I want but I don’t like the way it looks. I don’t like that you can only use icons on the main timeline. I want to be able to have small picture thumbnails in place of the Icons. I don’t care if this program is copied, modified or not used at all.
The important thing is that I can use this program to create an XML file of all of my pictures, events, video clips, audio clips and scans. Supposedly that XML file can be used for other applications like the Flash timeline I’d like to create.
Here is an example of the xml file the program creates which we could use if the program they provide can’t be modified or if it is easier to just create a new flash timeline. [url removed, login to view]
Incidentally - I saw a really cool site that has the look and functionality I would like but isn't actually used as a time line. But I like the vertical sliding time line that is full screen and having the items pop up on the left and right. [url removed, login to view] instead of in a box.
Here is some information I've pulled together about the project.
I am working on a project that I want to try and finish up this weekend. I have been scanning a family’s mementos, pictures, audio clips, and video and I need to enter them in a time line which is accessible on the web and can be copied to a cd and played on a computer.
I want the family to be able to scroll along the time line with a slider and stop at a thumb nail or link, be able to click it and have the picture with caption, video clip or audio file open and play in a separate window – or below the main timeline. At some places there will be many pictures so having a scrolling picture bar would be nice.
I’d also like the whole viewing area to be bigger.
Here are some other examples and sites that have flash timelines:
[url removed, login to view] - This site provides a flash timeline template which can be modified. It is plain and not very functional though.
Look at this example [url removed, login to view] and this example [url removed, login to view] to see what can be created.
Here is a really elaborate time line in Flash [url removed, login to view]
Let me know if you are interested, have the ability and the time to work on this project. I’ll look forward to hearing from you.
