Game and Software Developer | VR & Desktop

Hi there! My name's Toby, I have been programming games, software and websites for over 8 years, working with a range of technologies from Unity and C# or javascript to php or python. Even though I am relatively young, if you've got a programming project I'm sure I have the knowledge base and determination to learn that could help you achieve what you would like from your project. I have worked with multiple clients in the past, all of which have seemed happy with the projects I delivered. For more information feel free to check out my different portfolios and websites: [login to view URL] (my published games) [login to view URL] [login to view URL] (currently in development - has some photos of the bookshop app) [login to view URL] (currently in development)

Across the last year and a half I have developed and maintained two websites for my projects and freelancing career.

The first website I developed was "goldendonkeyproductions.com", this website is relatively simple but it created from scratch, using javascript, css, html, php, etc... I chose to do it this way as it was part of my A-Level computer science project, I would not do this again as I know much more about libraries and APIs that would make development much easier, but learning at such a low level is very useful. I also learnt more about SQL, linux server and web hosting through this project.

As for my "static" website, tobycsmith.com, I chose to use WordPress as the base to run the website on. I had previously used it for blog section of GoldenDonkeyProductions.com, but I wanted to go more in depth with it here. I have learnt much more about WordPress themes and plugins through this website, and have found many uses for it other than blogging, that I di

For this client I create a bookshop scanning app.

The client requested the ability to add, remove, edit, sell, and scan books in a database (I used json rather than a full SQL style database to allow the client to easily edit it). To do this I used electron js along with other web technologies. I began by using Windows Forms in C#, but I found their api system was lacking what javascript has, and as I wanted to use the google books api this was a large issue. I moved over to electron js which allowed me to create the app by laying it out like a "website" and then using electron js as a "browser" to run as it's container.

This also allows me to move the project onto a website or to mobile, relatively easily, if the client ever requests these features in the future. This app was a fun learning experience and has apparently worked well for the client purposes.

Across the past 7 years I have created over 25 released games and many more prototypes and unfinished personal projects. Those that I have released (and are public) can be found on my itch.io page: https://goldendonkey.itch.io/. That page is heavily curated so more can be found about my game development history on my website: https://tobycsmith.com/.

Some of the best examples of my skills can be found through my game jam projects. These are games that have been made in a short period of time, to a theme, for a competition, and they are amazing fun to take part in. Not all of the games turn out well polished or even fun to play, but they always teach me a lot while making them.

Experience

VR game developer

None disclosed
Nov 2021 - Dec 2021 (1 month, 2 days)
For this client I created a fully functional vr game from start to finish, using unity for the oculus quest. As of right now I have not asked for permission to go into detail of the project, but I can say that the client was extremely happy with the production and resulting project.

App developer

Christian bookshop
Jan 2021 - Aug 2021 (7 months, 1 day)
For this client I created a Web app running inside electron js that had the ability to add / sell books in a database by scanning barcodes. It used the Google books api along with other functions which allowed it to perform search, adding, editing, selling along with other tasks.
