My love for plants started at age 14, when encouraged by my Uncle Bill, I rode door to door on my bicycle selling Stark Brother’s Fruit Trees. I worked in my Uncle’s garden center, located in Lamar, Missouri during my High School years, and became manager of the branch store in Nevada, Missouri after completing High School in 1972. Wanting to further my education in the landscape horticultural field, I took a landscaping design and sales position with Roger’s Nursery in Wichita, Kansas. While there I took several courses at one of the local colleges on business and finance. In three short years I advanced to the position of General Manager of this multi-million dollar company with a staff of 30 to 40 employees. During the five years that I was employed by Roger’s Nursery, I dealt with all phases of running the largest “Design – Build” landscape firms in the state of Kansas. Every day duties involved outlining on going work assignments for all company employees, overseeing a thriving landscape maintenance department, directing the field and container growing operation, along with the responsibility for the retail sales, landscape design and installation. I dealt with company attorneys, lawyers, and accountants and only reported to the owner. It was a great learning experience for me. Having married and fathering two children, I decided to accept a position as manager of the landscaping and maintenance departments of Ozark Nursery located on North Main Street in Joplin, Missouri so that we could be closer to my wife’s family. During the four years that I spent working at Ozark, I increased gross sales from less than $100,000.00 per year to over 500,000.00 per year. In 1986, I formed my own landscape & nursery company. Over the next seven years I built the business to sales in excess of $1,000,000.00 and I had 15 to 20 full time employees. I designed and built over an acre of greenhouse growing space, 2 acres of container growing space and 80 acres of field growing area. In 1992 my landscaping operation was featured in the “American Nurseryman”, (the benchmark of the nursery business trade journals) for my innovative system of producing seasonal color plantings targeted towards large property management companies within a 300 mile radius of my own greenhouse and nursery operation. After a devastating fire in 1996, I sold my landscape operation and took semi retirement, purchasing a motor home and traveling the United States, where I started filming Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association rodeos. Along with my sister, I produced and published the Exclusive Internet coverage of the “Miss Rodeo America Pageant” for 5 years in a row, the Professional Bull Riders Finals, and during 2001 was the official videographer for the National High School Rodeo Finals in Springfield, Illinois. I utilized the Internet to sell subscriptions to my coverage of this last vestige of the American historical sporting events. In fact the use of computers has not only been a hobby for me, but has become a vital part of my success in the business world. I use computer technology along with digital photography to produce the landscape designs that you’ll find enclosed on this website. As you can easily see, the old adage “that a picture is worth a thousand words” certainly proves to be true when it comes to showing potential clients exactly what is available for them to help increase the value and the pleasure that they can attain by installing an appropriate landscape planting design! My motto is from an old African proverb – In Africa each morning a Gazelle awakens knowing that he needs to run as fast as he can so that a Lion won’t eat him. In Africa each morning a Lion awakens knowing that he needs to run as fast as he can so that he can catch a Gazelle to eat. I knows that he needs to be running each morning he awakens to attain the goals that he has set for himself and for DreamScape Designs.
