Prior to my career in bioinformatics I was a molecular biologist by trade. My first degree was awarded in the subject from Bangor University in North Wales, where for my Honours project I studied the plant glycoprotein Extensin. I spent a year as a postgraduate at the in-house North West Cancer Research Fund Institute, expression profiling a subset of a group of genes of great potential therapeutic interest. I subsequently enrolled on the highly respected Applied Bioinformatics MSc at the world-renowned Cranfield University. For my MSc thesis, I designed and maintained a database of information pertaining to the aforementioned group of genes, together with the relevant suite of information-gathering algorithms. This unconventional career path has afforded me a unique perspective on the interface between mainstream molecular biology and bioinformatics. As such, I feel I have an edge compared to wholly computational biologists, in that I am able to bridge the gap between in silico and bench research. As a researcher at heart, I am always looking to contribute by applying the skills I have acquired and offering original thought, whatever the field may be. My MSc studies have also ignited a passion for software development in general. My current personal interest is the development of literature mining algorithms in an attempt to uncover novel cancer gene targets. Google "Bespoke Bioinformatics" to find out more.
