The Sensory Room is a specially designed space that contains stimuli that engages the user and helps them to self-regulate their emotions. There is a variety of experiences in the room, which include the combination of fibre optic lighting, sounds, colours, soft objects, chair pods and sensory tools. All equipment is safe and the room is designed so that the individual can be seated comfortably and absorb the environment or play with a variety of sensory toys in the calming atmosphere.
Some documented benefits of the Sensory Room are an improvement in focus, an increased ability to self-regulate emotions, relieve stress and improve visual processing abilities.
Students will complete an orientation to the Sensory Room and will access the room individually or in small groups for 10 – 20 mins at a time.
Small groups will be supervised by a staff member and individual students will access the room alone or with 2 staff members.
To ensure student safety the room has permanent CCTV monitor.
