This project was created to serve as a portfolio piece. Photoshop was used to scan various book covers and the tops of pages. Realsoft 3D then was used to model all geometry appearing in the scene, using subdivision-surface (SDS) and NURBS (non-uniform rational B-splines) methods. After image maps were created in the 3D software, from the scans, these \\"surfaces\\" were mapped to the respective books and the table. Shaders were created for the candleholder and mug surfaces. Multiple light sources carefully were positioned and their properties set, and numerous test-renders were conducted to achieve the desired results. Finally, a single still was output to the .TGA (Targa) format, and this image was imported into VisionLab Studio for addition of the flame. A stock candle-flame preset was modified and keyframed to achieve the desired flickering result. Sequential stills were output to the .TGA format, then the stills imported into Adobe Premiere. A heavily touched-up and restored photograph of my paternal grandfather, dated to about 1915. The original photo was scanned from about a 5\\"x7\\", upsampled to approximately an 8\\"x10\\". The sky was completely reproduced using a gradient, and the Clone tool was used extensively to remove numerous scratches. The duotone look also was altered to simulate a more modern photo. The boy\'s shadow in the water was created by copying and pasting a copy of the boy in the canoe, then feathered, blurred, and benefiting from the \\"ripple\\" effect. Distortion also was applied to the boy\'s \\"shadow.\\"

This post-VFX piece was created for a local independent filmmaker who contracted for a pistol muzzle-flash to be added to existing video that he had shot--at 720x480 resolution. I (1) transferred the raw video footage (.raw) to my system from his mini-DV tape, then (2) used an advanced video editor (MoviePack eXtreme 4.0) to extract just the desired section from the file. (3) A modified \"muzzle flash\" effect was keyframed to span the appropriate length using VisionLab Studio. (4) The clip was rendered to the QuickTime .mov format for further client manipulation on his Macintosh system.
