Background / bio of Abd Latiff Bidin (ALB) • Taiping born ALB spent sometime as a teacher, town-planning assistant and in various positions in Shell Malaysia from 1971, before becoming a full time translator in 1997. He’s always had a great interest in language and literature and had many articles and poetry in English and Malay published in local newspapers and magazines, including DBP publications. Like a number of translators, ALB began his involvement in translation by translating letters and brochures for his employers and moved on to part time commercial translation. From 1978 he started translating freelance during his spare time and learned the art and science of translation the hard way. Upon his early retirement in 1997, with a small list of local and international clients to start with, he went full-time. In 1999 he began training new translators on the business aspects of translation and used the experience gained from those series of training to write Panduan Menjadi Penterjemah Komersial (Pustaka Cipta 2002). ALB resides in Port Klang with his wife and four children and on October 5th, he became a grandfather. • ALB is now helming Daya Cendekia Resources Sdn Bhd, a company set up with the objective of providing additional skills to fellow translators, especially newcomers who need the right preparation and introduction to this highly competitive but rewarding world of translation. He has conducted many “translation business-starter” seminars and has been invited to give talks to local universities, among them UKM, UPM, UiTM Segamat and USM Penang. • So far he has translated the following books: 1) "PETRONAS Twin Towers - A Vision Realized (1999, En>Ms, coffee-table book). 2) "Report: The Royal Commission of Enquiry's Investigations Into the Injuries of Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim Whilst In Police Custody" (1999, En>Ms, Unofficial). 3) "Censorship Guidelines for Islamic Publishing Materials" (1999, Ms>En) 4) "CITRA" - Institute of Language & Literature (DBP)" (Aug 2000, Ms>En) 5) "The Quran in our everyday life" (April 2001, En>Ms) 6) Karim Raslan’s Ceritalah: Malaysia in Transition (Dec 2002, En>Ms, Times Books International (now Marshall Cavendish)) 7) Karim Raslan’s Journeys Through Southeast Asia, Ceritalah II (Jan 2003, En>Ms, Times Books International) 8) Chamil Wariya’s Naik, Jatuh dan Bangun Semula – Perjalanan Politik Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (Dec 2004, Ms>En for Marshall Cavendish) – published in May 2005 9) Kishore Mahbubani’s Can Asians Think?
