In 2013 I was the lead developer for a Melbourne based startup solving mobile advertising for local businesses. Our platform was fully responsive and delivered using node.js and nosql technologies.

The company was pitched at Google's Sydney headquarters in September and won us entrepreneurial fellowship at Melbourne University's engineering department.

Creating a balanced online presence for a local flower shop and cafe while letting them take online orders was a challenging and rewarding task.

After spending some time with the clients I found that they were strongly involved in social media and used that to drive local business, so I made this a central part of their design. The Facebook plugin is used to drive further engagement to their Facebook page where the clients regularly engage with customers. In this case Twitter was used so that they could regularly update customers on their daily specials which was important for their core, repeat business.

Because the clients required so many components to their website I decided to make their online store a single page application. To achieve this I wrote a custom cms in node.js which interfaced with a very ajax heavy front end. The project was deployed to the Amazon cloud for maximum speed and scaling and was future proofed by using mongodb allowing for spec changes.

Restaurants are a joy to work for because they prioritize design aesthetics so highly. The home page that I developed uses a custom JQuery plugin to rotate the images and text to create a nice effect. With their menu page I strove for a balance between information density (they have a large menu) and aesthetics which I hope i reached.

All of the images used were taken on site by a photographer which I contracted out and oversaw. The restaurant owners in this case were very particular about typography so a lot of time was taken going back and forth to find a font set that met their requirements.
