Portfolio Items

There are 2 broad methods to analyze financials; discrete ratio analysis or an integrated framework (Ex. DuPont or ROIC tree).
The former can throw you off especially if you don't know what to look for, more so when one ratio says business is doing great while another contradicts it.
This here is an example of a framework analysis, this is the McKinsey framework called the ROIC tree.
I have a different take on it, this is a mini-model in itself and can leave the manager to focus on impact analysis in testing different scenarios say, "how much do I gain by shaving off 10% of my operating expenses" or "what if lay off 20% of the workforce from this division".
It is a Very powerful tool which few realize until they see it in action.
Integrated Performance Analysis
Sometimes Pivot Tables don't work for a client, they need something more direct where they can work with a limited number of inputs as opposed to sifting through several filters/dropdowns.
Here, the client wanted a heat map on 4-dimensional data. The data itself is quite complex and most of the work actually went into organizing it rather than building the actual reports.
Formulaic Report
Pivot Table reports are usually (not always!) the best way to get answers from voluminous data.
They are much lighter than going the formulaic route, can handle a lot of parameters pitted against each other and have a ton of operational flexibility.
Adding custom fields, grouping dates or price brackets only makes them more powerful.
However, sometimes the questions clients have simply cannot be answered with them and a customized formulaic report is the only way out.
Pivot Table Report
There is no such thing as a 'standard' Dashboard.
It varies by project, by how many variables are at play, how many such variables you would want to see in a single report etc.
This is an example of a more advanced dashboard where I had built an operating model for a highly regulated sector and there were a lot of variables that needed to be simultaneously compared.
Dashboard #1
This is what most clients mean when they say 'I want to analyze the performance of my business'.
A tool like this simply gives you a laundry list of categories and within that a ton of performance measures that the user can look through.
This is a laborious task but smart use of Excel can really make a huge difference to the end-user experience here.
Discrete Performance Analysis
The Client described it as 'I want to organize my Orderbook and want a few questions answered'. Though it ended up spanning 3 months and needed a ton of back-end data clean up!
Tools such as these are tricky because usually clients already have something in place, that serves as a reference for them and it becomes a challenge to explain to them why they need to rebuild one from scratch as opposed to trying to fix what's clearly... just off!
Then come issues with legacy data, random text and numbers in the same column, missing data points, incorrect date formats, file management issues and the like.
Such an exercise is not just about building something sophisticated, unbreakable yet modular but also about spending time educating the end user on how to use it efficiently.

The project involved building perhaps, a first-of-its kind comprehensive & modular Family Office tool. The tool was designed to evaluate an exhaustive list of financial services that a wealthy family may require help with. And planning of each such service across the horizon in the context of; pre-defined laws, state acts and individual requirements of a given family. The stint also saw me filling up on a few buyside & sellside mandates.
