Being an Professional we always have this 10 feature in our mind ! Check it out 1.) Critical thinking skills/problem solving skills 2.) Open Mindedness 3.) Enthusiasm 4.) Willing to learn new skills and wear more hats 5.) Aptitude for Engineering 6.) Communicate ideas effectively: Verbal, written, and in sketch form. 7.) Sees the forest through the trees 8.) Variety of design/life experiences: Mentally mature 9.) Aptitude for Graphic Design 10.) Materials and Manufacturing knowledge Here is a break down of the aforementioned list. 1.) Critical thinking skills/proble m solving skills Can you think on your feet? Can you read into a problem or design brief and think your way through the problem from more than one perspective? Finding one solution isn't the end of the line. We need to explore as many perspectives as possible. This is an overlooked skill that can be learned, but it requires a commitment on your part. Look for the positives and the negatives, being honest with yourself will yield more effective solutions. These qualities directly relate to the next item on the list. 2.) Open Mindedness Any time you enter a situation with a biased perspective you are limiting yourself to what you have already perceived is the answer. You can get around this, but it will take you more time to get up to speed. Listen to those around you, think about it from a variety of perspectives and don't think any idea is a bad one until you are ready to trim the fat off your ideas. 3.) Enthusiasm Your enthusiasm can have a dramatic effect on others. Being open minded and enthusiastic about the potential of a project can heighten the quality of your results and the attitude of those around you. Besides, if you aren't genuinely enthusiastic about your work, others will notice. 4.) Willing to learn new skills and wear more hats If you are looking for a career then you better put your steel toe shoes on. Hiring managers don't want to hire someone who will leave in a year or two or three. The cost associated with hiring a new employee is very high. And they wan tot make sure they hire someone who is in it for the long haul and is genuinely committed to great results. 5.) Aptitude for Engineering Here is a hat many designers refuse to wear. And I understand, we didn't pursue Engineering, but we need to know general Engineering principles. If you take this head on, you can make a career for yourself and stay away from the top of the pile when/if the axe falls. 6.) Communicate ideas effectively: Verbally, written, and in sketch form. Communication/Presentation skills are right there at the top of the list and not just the visual presentation skills we have all been trained in but verbal ones as well. Verbal presentation skills area a skill that many designers place on the back burner and this skill can win you business, and being able to articulate your ideas in a verbal fashion can make all of the difference. 7.) Sees the forest through the trees This means that you see the big picture not just the day to day grind. Don't forget the goal of your effort. Solving a problem, creatively assessing environmental issues, developing simplified manufacturing processes, etc. 8.) Variety of design/life experiences: Mentally mature Are you able to handle the real challenges that you can encounter in the work place? This can include the mental and physical stresses that can manifest themselves in your day to day life. Have you taken the reigns of you career and pursued design challenges outside of your comfort zone? These experiences will show your interests and drive to understand. It will also be a solid gauge of your aptitude for the previously unknown. 9.) Aptitude for Graphic Design Even if you didn't study Graphic Design in college you are expected to present your ideas in a visually intense format. This includes many of the skills that a Graphic Designer would employ when developing a portfolio or presenting their work to a client. 10.) Materials and Manufacturing knowledge Every time I see a new product that employs a new material or manufacturing process. I am inevitable led to the desire t5o understand why and how this solution was defined as the best approach. If the product is a ground breaking one or implores new materials then I seek out those materials so that I can understand their properties and how it or the next stage of that material could impact my next design project. I hope these insights will assist you in finding your next design position. I am sure you know that these skills are but a handful of the tools you will need throughout your design career. Just remember what drove you to spend you college career in the studio, and then take that inspiration with you to work everyday.
